Corporate News : SAMSUNG RECYCLING DIRECT Launches In 174 Sites Across 50 States
RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. – October 1, 2008 – Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, today launched SAMSUNG RECYCLING DIRECT, its commitment to the take-back and recycling (TB&R) of Samsung consumer electronics across all of its product lines. Beginning today, consumers can bring their Samsung-branded consumer electronics sold in the United States to 174 fixed drop-off locations across all 50 states for recycling for no fee. The program will also accept non-Samsung-branded consumer electronics for a nominal fee paid directly to the recycler upon delivery of the e-waste. Home appliances are currently being taken back in a growing number of locations.
SAMSUNG RECYCLING DIRECT was announced on September 3, 2008. Today, Samsung unveiled additional information on this program at www.samsung.com/recyclingdirect. Consumers who visit the site can learn about the program, find recycling collection sites in all 50 states, and read about upcoming recycling drives to be held in many locations throughout the U.S. In addition, Samsung hosted recycling events for thousands of its employees at seven of its campuses in the United States, including Ridgefield Park, NJ; Mt. Arlington, NJ; Rancho Dominquez, CA; Richardson, TX; Austin, TX; San Diego, CA; and San Jose, CA.
"We invited our employees to participate in the launch of SAMSUNG RECYCLING DIRECT by dropping off their consumer electronics at work, where we have collaborated with our respected recycling partners to accept retired electronics," said DJ Oh, President and CEO, Samsung Electronics America. "Thousands of Samsung employees across the country demonstrated their shared commitment to the environment by recycling consumer electronics products, including mobile phones, televisions, cameras, VCRs, computers and monitors. We are truly inspired by this level of receptivity and participation."
programs under Samsung’s control in certain states and its current 50-state initiatives for the TB&R of toner cartridges, mobile phones and office equipment. Today's SAMSUNG RECYCLING DIRECT kick-off expands the scope of products that are now being collected in all 50 states and the convenience for consumers to responsibly recycle their consumer electronics. The program got off to a fast start as Samsung employees added their consumer electronics to the SAMSUNG RECYCLING DIRECT total that will be processed and recycled responsibly by Samsung’s leading recycling partners. These partners are obligated under the program not to incinerate, send to solid waste landfill, or export toxic waste (defined in a manner consistent with the commonly accepted definition of hazardous electronic waste) to developing countries. Details about our standards for responsible recycling are available at www.samsung.com/recyclingdirect.
On the website consumers can also find information regarding SAMSUNG RECYCLING DIRECT including the ability to search by zip code to find a detailed map and list of fixed drop-off locations in their area, as well as information on future recycling drives sponsored by Samsung, its retail and business partners, and its respected recyclers. In addition, the SAMSUNG RECYCLING DIRECT web site will serve as an ongoing reporting tool to showcase the results of this program. “On September 3rd, 2008 Samsung set a goal of securing at least one SAMSUNG RECYCLING DIRECT location in each state by today’s launch. I am proud of Samsung’s progress in exceeding that goal and developing a 174 permanent site network, which we believe sets an industry precedent in making it easy and convenient for consumers to recycle their consumer electronics,” said Steven Cook, senior vice president and chief strategic marketing officer, Samsung Electronics America. “We are committed to providing a public record of our environmental progress, and are confident that we can raise the standards of consumer electronics recycling by working with an interdisciplinary Samsung team and a highly-qualified network of recycling partners, all of whom are governed by stringent standards & guidelines that ensure accountability, transparency and responsibility at every step along the way."

Corporate News : Samsung Electronics Appoints New Executive Leadership in Major Organizational Realignment
SEOUL, Korea – December 15, 2009 - Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., one of the world's leading technology companies, today appointed Geesung Choi as its new CEO, as part of an organizational restructuring aimed to increase operating efficiencies and strengthen the independence of the company's business divisions.
Samsung also enhanced its C-suite by appointing Jay Y. Lee to the newly created position of Chief Operating Officer and Ju-Hwa Yoon as Chief Financial Officer. Yoon-woo Lee, currently Vice Chairman and CEO, continues only as Chairman of the Board of Directors.
In order to establish greater autonomy at the operating level, Samsung also announced it will be adopting a “company system” in which each business unit is managed similarly to a stand-alone company. The new alignments, both organizationally and at the executive level, create a more focused and responsive business structure.
“Samsung has recovered well over the past year, thanks to Yoon-woo Lee's leadership and a measured response to the global financial crisis,” said Mr. Choi, the incoming CEO. "With this forward momentum, we believe now is the time for us to make these important organizational changes to prepare for the challenges and opportunities ahead."
Samsung's consolidated operating profit for the first nine months of this year has reached 7.22 trillion Korean won (US$6.08 billion as of end of September 30) on sales of 97.05 trillion won (US$81.69 billion as of end of September 30). This compares with a full year 2008 consolidated operating profit of 6.03 trillion won (US$4.8 billion) on sales of 121.29 trillion won (US$96.5 billion).
Strengthened C-Suite
Effective immediately, the heads of all Samsung Electronics business divisions report to Mr. Choi and the C-suite. The new C-suite provides a more unified and efficient management team, consistent with global business models, and reflecting the executive structures of many leading multinationals.
“Our renewed profitability enabled us to think long-term - to make sure we can continue leading the market,” Mr. Choi said. “As a result, we've strengthened the C-Suite and created a new executive position - the COO - to help expedite decision making, improve efficiency, and mediate between our business units, ensuring that they work well together in meeting our customers' needs.”
Specifics on the executive appointments announced today are:
· Geesung Choi, named President and CEO of Samsung Electronics; previously President and head of the company's Digital Media and Communications Business.
Previous positions held by Mr. Choi include President of the Telecommunications Networks Business, and President of the Digital Media Business.
· Jay Y. Lee, named to the newly-created position of Chief Operating Officer; was promoted to Executive Vice President from Senior Vice President.
Previous positions held by Mr. Lee include Chief Customer Officer and Vice President-Strategic Planning.
· Ju-Hwa Yoon, named Chief Financial Officer; previously President and head of the Corporate Auditing Team.
Previous positions held by Mr. Yoon include head of the Management Support Team.
Independent Company Organizational Structure
Samsung's new organizational structure enhances the independence of the company's business divisions. The new alignment introduces a "company system" in which each business unit is managed similarly to a stand-alone company, with its own President and CFO. Outside Korea, subsidiaries responsible for components such as semiconductors and LCD panels will continue to operate as fully independent entities separate from Samsung’s IT and consumer electronics subsidiaries.
Previously Samsung had 10 operating divisions organized into two principal businesses - Digital Media &Communications and Device Solutions. The reorganization today replaces the two-business structure with seven independent companies under a single corporate entity and unified C-suite.
While creating greater autonomy at the operating level, the benefits of the new structure also include reducing the company's decision-making hierarchy from three to two stages, and supporting stronger focus and speed of execution in business and investment strategy. Customers will gain from increased independence in decision-making and faster speed to market.
From the first quarter 2010, Samsung will also adopt the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), global accounting principles established by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and practiced by many global corporations.

Corporate News : Samsung Collects and Recycles 12 Million Pounds of E-Waste in 2009
RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J., November 13, 2009 – Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a leader in creating the latest innovations in the consumer electronics and telecommunications industries, has added a leading recycling program to its growing list of successes as a leader in environmental stewardship. This month, Samsung collected and recycled its 12 millionth pound of e-waste in 2009. Samsung Recycling Direct©, launched in October 2008, is the company’s 50-state recycling program, which allows consumers to drop off their consumer electronics products at over 200 permanent drop-off centers in the U.S.
The recycling milestone comes on the heels of a bevy of sustainability achievements and successes from Samsung. As companies get ready for National Recycling Day on November 15th, the U.S. EPA “PlugIn To e-Cycling” project gave Samsung an honorable mention for covering the cost of recycling for more than 2 million pounds of TV waste without a mandate or funding e-waste recycling programs. The company has also received state recognition awards in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and New Hampshire for its recycling efforts, and recently received three Eco-Design honors from the Consumer Electronics Association.
At a global level, the Korea-based manufacturer in September ranked tenth globally and first in Asia among corporations on the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index, which assesses corporate policies and activities companies engage in to respond to climate change. Samsung also announced recently its collaboration with Microsoft involving efficient energy usage in computers utilizing Microsoft’s Windows 7 Operating System and Samsung’s 40 nanometer class DDR3 DRAM, which decrease energy usage, reduce energy demands and the amount of electricity that must be generated, therefore reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“Samsung has always been known for our top consumer electronics. Now we are utilizing our expertise in cutting-edge technology to make our products greener, increasing their energy efficiency, as well as improving the manufacturing and distribution processes behind them,” said David Steel, SVP of Strategic Marketing, Samsung Electronics America. “Our sustainability commitment is holistic in our 360 degree approach, addressing the impact of our products from creation to discard.”
Samsung's 360-degree approach is part of a 2009 launch of Eco-Management 2013, a company-wide environmental sustainability initiative that emphasizes a commitment to making environmental guardianship a priority across the business. The initiative, announced in July this year, includes a $4.3 billion pledge to eco-management, a 50 percent reduction target for greenhouse gas emissions normalized by sales from global manufacturing facilities, an 84 million ton reduction of indirect greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing products, and a promise to make 100 percent of Samsung products eco-friendly over the next five years.
Fifty-two percent of Americans say they want to be more green or environmentally conscious, ranking that as a priority over dieting, exercise and changing jobs in 2009, according to Roper Green Gauge 2009.
Samsung is passing its greener ways onto consumers, allowing them to choose products that operate more sustainably once at home. Earlier this year, the company launched its line of LED HDTVs that are mercury free and consume up to 40 percent less energy than similarly sized 2008 LCD HDTVs. Samsung’s 2009 plasma HDTVs consume 39 percent less power than 2008 models of similar sizes, and the Samsung ReclaimTM, the company’s first eco-friendly U.S. mobile phone is built using bio-plastics from corn and made up of 80 percent recyclable materials. The Reclaim includes a virtual user manual and packaging made from 70 percent recycled materials printed with soy ink. Additionally, a portion of the ReclaimTM mobile phone sales are donated to the Nature Conservancy’s Adopt an Acre program, which supports land conservation across the U.S.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Develops World’s Largest (82”) Full HDTV TFT-LCD
SEOUL, Korea – March 7, 2005 – Samsung Electronics, the leading provider of TFT-LCD display panels, announced that it has developed the world's largest 82-inch TFT-LCD. This full HD image quality TFT-LCD panel was developed at the company's new production complex in Tangjeong, Korea. The soon-to-be operational 7 th -generation production facility uses glass substrates that measure 1.87m x 2.20m. Samsung has made a series of breakthroughs in TFT-LCD technology ahead of the competition over the years. The company developed the first 40-inch model in August 2001, the first 46-inch panel in October 2002, the first 57-inch model in December 2003 and now the first 82-inch panel. At its 7 th -generation Line 7-1, Samsung can produce two 82-inch panels from a single substrate. Previously, technological limitations prevented the development of LCDs of this size and competitive technologies, such as PDP and DLP technologies, were used to produce such large-sized panels. Samsung's latest large-screen TFT-LCD offers a variety of features. The company applied its patented Super Patterned-ITO Vertical Alignment (S-PVA) technology to achieve extra-wide viewing angles. In addition, the product boasts a low-dispersion color filter and ultra high aperture ratio, achieving a contrast ratio of at least 1200:1 and brightness of 600nit (cd/m 2 ). Response times are at 8ms or faster, providing clear moving picture images. A high-color-saturation backlight raises color saturation to 92% to produce a premium image quality. Sang Soo Kim, Senior Vice President and Head of the LCD Development Center, states, “Our 82-inch LCD panel proves Samsung Electronics' technological leadership. It uses our proprietary S-PVA technology, eliminating distortion from all angles and offers a 180-degree viewing angle. With this panel, we have achieved the world's best performance in terms of contrast ratio, viewing angle and color saturation.” Samsung is set to begin operations at the world's first 7 th -generation TFT-LCD production line at Tangjeong, Korea. This facility can be used to produce the company's full line-up of LCD modules for TV: from 23-inch (24 per substrate), 26-inch (18 per substrate) and 32-inch (12 per substrate) to 40-inch (8 per substrate) and 46-inch (6 per substrate). Samsung Electronics is at least one year ahead of the competition in terms of using 7 th -generation production technology to make modules of 40 inches, 46 inches and 57 inches. It is therefore in a position to take an early lead in the fast-growing market for large-screen, wall-hanging TVs. The development of the 82-inch TFT-LCD marks the smooth launch of Samsung's and Sony's joint venture in S-LCD. The 7 th -generation line will begin mass production at the end of March. Samsung Electronics will unveil its 82-inch TFT-LCD at CeBIT 2005, which opens in Hannover, Germany on March 10. Samsung Electronics' LCD Lines

Terminology PVA Technology
Patterned-ITO Vertical Alignment is a proprietary Samsung technology for achieving a wide viewing-angle. The liquid crystal molecules are originally aligned at 90 degrees vertically to the electrodes. The passage of an electric field deflects the liquid crystal molecules off-vertical, producing the required image. Similar to the multi-domain vertical alignment (VA), the liquid crystals are controlled by separating unit pixels into four domains. S-PVA Technology
Samsung's patented Super PVA is an upgraded PVA liquid crystal cell technology. The cell architecture accommodates eight, rather than the conventional four crystals, so that the liquid crystal molecules can be controlled in eight different directions and angles. This capability greatly enhances the side viewing-angle of the LCD screen. Color Saturation
This is a measurement of color purity and is compared against the NTSC (National Television Standard Committee) standard of 100. Commercial CRT TVs and LCD TVs normally have a color saturation of 72%, but a higher level is needed to achieve high-definition image quality. TV Resolution Classifications

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Showcases Its Latest Innovations in Home Entertainment
NEW YORK - September 16, 2003 - This year at the DigitAll Inspiration 2003 event in New York, SAMSUNG Electronics showcased the latest additions to its line of home entertainment devices. They include the DVD-HD931 high-definition DVD player with the worlds first digital visual interface output, and the HT-DB660 5.1-channel surround sound system that eliminates the hassle of stringing cables around the room for audiophiles and those consumers who like true-to-life sound. More about the DVD-HD931
SAMSUNG's new DVD-HD931 is unmatched for DVD playback, outperforming conventional or even progressive scan picture quality. The latest scaling-up technology is used to increase video resolution from standard definition to the resolution of most HD TVs (720p/1080i). In addition, Farouds renowned de-interlacing picture correction technology, known as DCDiTM, is utilized to maintain natural fluidity of the video signal without jagged or coarse outlines. SAMSUNG's new DVD player also utilizes the worlds first digital visual interface (DVI) output to transmit uncompressed digital video signals without analogue conversion, preventing image quality loss. More about the HT-DB660
The perfect way to enjoy a high-quality DVD or digital broadcast is to add a 5.1-channel surround sound system. However, creating that home theater-style environment can be difficult especially when it comes to connecting those rear speakers. Now, SAMSUNG's HT-DB660, which features innovative rear reflection technology, stands out for its easy installation, excellent sound quality and improved design. The rear reflecting surround system incorporates front and rear speakers in a single unit, simplifying problems with space and speaker lines. SAMSUNG has broken new ground by offering a system without rear speakers that can generate the same quality surround sound available from conventional 5.1-channel home theater systems. Early this year, SAMSUNG completed development of its proprietary Super Digital Sound Master (sDSM) technology that optimizes the sound field via digital signal processing. State-of-the-art digital technology prevents possible direct sound from the rear channel. Sound compensation circuit technology is also used for optimizing reflected rear sound. As a result, consumers save floor space and complexity without compromising sound quality. The sDSM technology features Auto Sound Calibration, which optimizes 5.1-channel sound output to suit the particular acoustic characteristics of any given location. With a simple touch of a button, users get the best possible sound levels and frequency setting. SAMSUNG's HT-DB660 also features Live Surround Mode for the simulated experience of a theater or a concert hall, Super 5.1 Channel Function for converting two-channel sound from CDs or TV to 5.1-channel sound, and Magic Headphones for a simulated surround effect on any set of headphones. Corporate News : SAMSUNG Electronics Develops Largest Flexible LCD Panel
Seoul, Korea – November 28 th , 2005 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., announced today that it has developed the world's largest transmissive TFT LCD ( thin-film transistor, liquid crystal display), with sufficiently high resolution to display digital television content. The seven-inch, 640x480 (VGA-standard) flexible display uses a transparent plastic substrate that is thinner, lighter and more durable than the conventional LCD glass panels used today. Moreover, the full-color transmissive LCD panel maintains a constant thickness even when it is bent. Considered the next-generation in flat panel displays, this technology involves the use of pliable plastic instead of rigid glass substrates in TFT-LCD production. The plastic will not break when flexed, allowing much greater freedom in commercial designs requiring flexible full-color, high-resolution display components. The seven-inch flexible TFT-LCD is optimized for mobility applications, including cell phones and notebook computers. System designers and OEMs also may apply the advanced Samsung display technology to new applications, such as fashion-enhancing or wearable electronic display designs, thanks to its differentiated flexible format. The new display is double the size of Samsung's five-inch flexible LCD display prototype announced in January 2005. With this advancement, Samsung has overcome daunting problems involving the plastic substrate's heat sensitivity including a previous challenge to maintain the display's substrate thickness when subjected to typical commercial thermal conditions. Samsung developed an low-temperature processing technique that can be used to manufacture the display's amorphous thin-film transistors, color filters and liquid crystals at process temperatures much lower than standard glass-based, amorphous silicon (a-Si )technology. Drawing on technology adopted for the production of low-temperature (less than 130 degrees Celsius) a-Si TFT LCD and color filter, Samsung's proprietary LCD technology minimizes substrate deformation by preventing not only changes in thickness but also distortion of images by binding two extremely-thin panels together through a new proprietary system design. The latest flexible LCD panel was developed under a three-year program funded by Samsung Electronics' next-generation display development group under the auspices of the Korean Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, supported by Samsung's Corporate Research Fund.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Electronics Announces 2005 Third-Quarter Earnings Record Number of Handset Sales in the Third Quarter
Seoul, Korea, October 14, 2005 : Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced its financial results for the third quarter of 2005. The company recorded net income of 1.88 trillion won, on sales 14.54 trillion won. Operating income was 2.13 trillion won, or up 28.8% from the previous quarter.
Net profit in the third-quarter increased 11% compared with the previous quarter, while sales jumped 7% compared to the previous quarter.
The growth rate in net profit in the third-quarter was less than that of operating profit due to provisions set aside to cover costs related to the U.S-government investigation into the price-fixing of memory chips. Due to the provisions, equity-related gains decreased in the third quarter.
Sales and net income of the Semiconductor Business increased to 4.59 trillion won and 1.35 trillion won, respectively, as demand for NAND Flash chips used in MP3 players and mobile phones remained robust. Migration to the finer process technology in both DRAM and NAND Flash helped reduce manufacturing costs and boost profitability. Samsung produces DRAM chips on 80nm and 90nm processes, and the company finished developing a 512Mbit DDR2 memory device on a 70nm process. Yields per wafer will be 100% higher than using 90nm technology. The Telecommunication Network Business posted sales of 4.58 trillion won, and operating income of 550 billion won. Samsung sold a record 26.8 million phones in the third quarter. Globally, the handset market is increasing becoming more competitive as companies produce more mid-to-low-end handsets. Meanwhile, Samsung continues to be a market leader in the high-end, premium handset sector.. Demand for Blue-Black phones, which were launched November 2004, remained robust in the third quarter. The company expects stronger ASPs in the fourth quarter with the launch of new premium products such as the D600 and 3G phones. The LCD Business reported revenue and operating income figures of 2.68 trillion won and 300 billion won, respectively. The company expects its performance to improve in the fourth quarter as demand for LCDs increases, especially of sales of 32-inch and larger LCD TV panels. Digital Media Business sales decreased to 1.64 trillion won and posted a 20 billion won operating loss. Sales of its Digital Appliance Business dropped 15% to 850 billion won and operating income at 40 billion won. Dr. Woosik Chu, Senior Vice President of Samsung’s investor-relations team, said “Despite the challenging business environment and depressed market conditions, sales of our mainstay products remained robust, demonstrating the inherent strength and competitiveness of Samsung’s business model.” Dr. Chu adds, “Samsung Electronics anticipates positive fourth-quarter results as demand for IT products tend to surge in the year end.”

Raj Raithatha, Chief Executive Officer of Versatel, stated: “Versatel is the first Dutch operator that provides multi media services over ADSL2+. Our ADSL2+ network has given us the necessary bandwidths to transmit television, video, telephony and internet services through a single copper line, thus giving Versatel a leading role in the introduction of new multi play services in the Netherlands. Given the tight time frame and the innovative character of the services, Samsung has proven to be a dedicated and reliable partner in the roll out of ADSL2+ in the Netherlands”. In eight months, Samsung managed to deploy an ADSL2+ full IP TPS network in the Netherlands. This turn key end-to-end solution consists of the delivery, integration and installation of next generation network components, including soft switches, media gateways, trunk gateways, DSLAMs, media farms and Ethernet switches. To complete the solution, Samsung has delivered integrated access devices (IADs) and IP set top boxes for triple play services, and broadcast servers. Patrick Bosschart, European Business Director of Samsung Telecommunication Network System Division, said: “Through a successful launch of this first ADSL2+ full IP network in the world, Samsung demonstrated its capability as an end-to-end solution provider, establishing and designing a comprehensive network for business partners. Thanks to our leadership in consumer electronics, IP technology and our large experience in the design and integration of large-scale networks for service operators, we have created a competitive advantage in the development of next generation networks.” About Samsung Electronics.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Electronics at Center of Phenomenal “Flash Rush”
S eoul , Korea , Sept ember 12, 2005 – Samsung Electronics Co. , Ltd. , the world leader in advanced memory technology, announced that the semiconductor industry is at a major turning point in the use of memory for data storage. Referring to a modern-day “Flash Rush,” Dr. Chang-Gyu Hwang president and CEO of Samsung Electronics' Semiconductor Business, said that tremendous advancements in NAND flash as well as a surge in the memory's supply and demand, is forever changing the way consumers and businesses use portable computer and electronics technology.
“The future of NAND is setting the stage for an irreversible shift in the design of digital end products as NAND becomes the key storage medium for data in virtually any portable form,” Dr. Hwang said at a press conference today at the Shilla Hotel in downtown Seoul , Korea . He compared the growing embrace of NAND technology for data storage applications to that of the Gold Rush of 1849, which permanently transformed the value and importance of gold around the word almost overnight. “NAND flash will eventually replace other storage mediums, especially those used in mobile products, creating a “ Flash Rush, ” as NAND continues to register an unprecedented surge in demand as the backbone of the mobile electronics era ,” Dr. Hwang added. When Samsung introduced the “New Memory Growth Model” at an ISSCC conference in 2002, NAND was predicted to show double density growth annually. Indeed, the predictable rapid evolution of NAND flash density from 256 Megabits (Mb) in 1999 to 8Gb in 2004, is playing a major role in its becoming the new primary storage medium for portable digital products. Dr. Hwang predicted that the phenomenal speed at which the industry is shifting to NAND flash will trigger a ripple effect across the electronic industry that will result in increased portability, a wealth of new design choices and much more convergence in digital applications. Samsung's 16Gb NAND flash memory, revealed today in a separate announcement, will further spur the proliferation of NAND as the dominant storage medium in portable digital applications from DSCs, USB drives, MP3 players, DVCs, PMPs and mobile handsets to tablet PCs, sub-notebooks and even some notebooks where NAND is beginning to compete aggressively with mini HDDs. (hard disk drives). In 2002, when Samsung foretold the dramatic shift in storage mediums, market forecasts for NAND predicted a mere US$1.7Billion in revenues this year, while global NAND flash memory revenues are actually expected to reach US$10.1billion this year, more than a five-fold increase. Over the past four years, NAND flash market has witnessed a compounded growth rate of 70 percent annually. This year, it appears clear that NAND will surpass NOR as the most popular flash memory.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Re-defines Home Entertainment with a Wide Array of Groundbreaking Digital Entertainment Products
SAMSUNG Electronics Co., Ltd. once again demonstrates its remarkable innovation in the home entertainment industry, with the debut of six new showcase products at CES 2004. The company’s new 57" TFT-LCD and 80" PDP set new standards in flat screen quality while its Blue Laser Optical Disc Recorder and two new Home Theater systems deliver unsurpassed quality in the home entertainment experience.
57” TFT-LCD Panel TV and 80” PDP TV
SAMSUNG is expanding its already impressive portfolio of TV display technology for the home with the unveiling of its new 57” TFT-LCD for High Definition (HD) TV. The dramatic 57” prototype represents the largest possible size for a fifth-generation glass substrate. Offering full HDTV functionality, the 57” model features SAMSUNG’s improved PVA (ITO Patterned Vertical Alignment) and advanced polarizer technologies to achieve a 1000:1 contrast ratio ? a significant advance over the common 400:1 and even the 800:1 ratio of SAMSUNG’s preceding 54” TFT-LCD panel.
Analysts project worldwide sales of LCD-TVs larger than 40” to dramatically increase from 4.2 million units in 2003 to 28.6 million units in 2007. With its latest largest-ever model, SAMSUNG now offers the broadest range of TFT-LCD TVs ? from 15” to 57”? to meet rising market demand.
SAMSUNG will also showcase at CES its 80” PDP TV, further demonstrating the company’s prowess in large screen flat panel TVs. Its 80-inch screen is the largest ever in its category. Also with its 1920*1080 resolution this TV is capable of displaying HD signal to its fullest. An exceptional brightness of 800cd/m2 and the contrast ratio of 2000:1 were also achieved.
All SAMSUNG flat panel TVs feature the company’s patented Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe) technology to ensure the greatest clarity in HD broadcast signals.
Blue Laser Optical Disc Recorder
A perfect complement to SAMSUNG’s new displays, the company is also debuting the Blu-ray Disc Recorder (BD-R1000), a blue laser-based optical disc device that combines the features of digital and analog recording, DVD and CD playback, and Home Theater functionality in a convenient set-top box form factor. Users can record their HDTV broadcasts onto an optical disc, preserving the full quality of content for playback at any time.
The BD-R1000 includes both ATSC digital and NTSC analog recording and playback features. SAMSUNG designed the large-scale integrated circuits, deck and pick-up components of this recordable DVD/CD player expressly for next-generation, digital convergence products.
The unit offers recording time of 2 hours in HD quality or 12 hours in SD quality. In addition, precise Servo Control and BD navigation (for quick and easy access to recorded contents) further enhance this top-of-line device for the home entertainment enthusiast.
Advanced Home Theater Receivers and Speakers
Joining SAMSUNG’s new flat panels and high-definition Blu-ray Disc Recorder is the company’s new line of innovative home theater systems.
The HT-AS700 slim digital A/V receiver is capable of upgrading 5.1-channel sound into a 6.1-channel listening experience with Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic II. The receiver also performs DTS-ES decoding and delivers 90W into each of six channels. Multi-channel analog audio input supports DVD-Audio or SACD connections. Binding posts for front speaker outputs and dual subwoofer outputs support easy installation.
The HT-AS2000 deluxe receiver is designed not only for people who appreciate powerful home theater sound but for serious music listeners as well. The product features 6.1 channels of Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS-ES, and is rated to deliver 130W into each of its six channels with powerful and quality sound. Eight audio inputs and four audio outputs ? with multi-room, RS-232C and optional 12V trigger support ? allow the music lover to wire an entire home.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Asserts Mobile Industry Leadership with Six Compelling Solutions in Memory, System Logic and Display
Taipei, Taiwan – March 22, 2005 : Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today demonstrated the world's first 1Gigabit (Gb) mobile DRAM, and unveiled five other leading edge mobile technologies that underscore its leadership in driving innovation and efficiency within the mobile industry. The advancements announced included a System-in-Package (SiP) with a 300MHz mobile CPU, a 1Gigabit (Gb) NAND flash memory, a 256Megabit (Mb) mobile DRAM, a 260K color display driver IC (DDI) for active matrix OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes), a qVGA resolution one-chip DDI and a 2.5-inch qVGA TFT LCD for MP3 players. Samsung offers the widest range and some of the most advanced mobile technologies in the world. The new technologies were previewed to nearly 700 industry executives at the 2 nd Samsung Mobile Solution Forum, held here in the Westin Taipei Hotel. ADVANCED SYSTEM-IN-PACKAGE
Conference attendees were shown Samsung's new SiP – the first package containing a 300MHz mobile CPU, a 1Gb NAND Flash memory and a 256Mb mobile DRAM. The high density, high-performance logic-CPU design will accommodate the increasingly large data processing and storage needs of portable game consoles, handsets, camcorders and personal data assistants (PDAs). By combining memory and system LSI technology, Samsung is coupling proven components within advanced package technology to improve mobile system integration, reduce power consumption and minimize size limitations. SiPs also reduce interference between devices, adding significantly to system reliability. HIGH DENSITY MOBILE DRAM
Samsung displayed another major innovation at its Mobile Forum, a 1Gb mobile DRAM, the first one-gigabit memory device to be publicly exhibited. The new 1Gb mobile DRAM will support higher data processing requirements in graphics-enhanced digital camcorders, while accommodating five megapixel and higher resolutions in digital still cameras. The newly developed SDRAM operates at 664 megabytes per second and has been optimized to function at 1.8 volts in maximizing battery life through the use of Samsung proprietary partial array self refresh (PASR) and temperature compensated self refresh (TCSR) technologies. DISPLAY DRIVER ICs
Samsung's 260K color display driver IC (DDI) for AM OLEDs utilizes 0.25um process technology to reduce the size of the device to approximately 40 percent of leading competitive models. The DDI for AM OLED features a quarter common interchange format (qCIF, 176xRGBx240 pixel) along with a 1.8 volt power level. With its new AM OLED application, Samsung now has developed the widest range of DDI technology from STN-, TFT-LCD and AM OLED. Also at the conference, Samsung announced a high resolution quad video graphics array (qVGA, 240xRGBx320 pixel). The qVGA DDI device features a built-in timing controller IC, a source driver, a gate driver, 1.3Mb SRAM and a power supply circuit. This five-in-one-chip solution was designed using 0.18um process technology and utilizes micro-pad pitching technology. TFT LCD FOR MP3s
In its final public unveiling at the Mobile Forum, Samsung previewed a TFT LCD for MP3 players. The new 2.5-inch panel is 2.5-inches features crisp QVGA display resolution. Samsung proprietary Vertical Alignment (VA) technology enables wide viewing angles for optimal viewing of music videos and other visual displays that accompany MP3 music files.
