Corporate News : SAMSUNG Electronics Introduces the World’s Largest TFT-LCD Television
Hanover, 13 March, 2003 - Continuing its expansion as a leader in the consumer electronics industry, Samsung today unveiled its Thin Film Transistor, Liquid Crystal Display (TFT-LCD) 54-inch television - the world's largest TFT-LCD TV.
A flat panel TV of this size was previously possible only with plasma display panel technology. Now, the inherent qualities of TFT-LCD TV present a crisper image, higher resolution and much less power consumption - and a lighter weight. With the introduction of the new 54-inch TFT-LCD TV, Samsung Electronics is clearly demonstrating that it is ready to take the lead in living room big-screen TV.
Samsung's new 54-inch TFT-LCD TV also excels in performance. Its less than 12ms response time - a crucial indicator of a TFT-LCD TV's motion picture capability - ensures a smooth playback of even the most action-packed visual contents. With a 1920 x 1080 resolution and 16:9 screen ratio, it is fully HD ready and can accommodate future changes in broadcasting.
The image on screen is exceptionally bright, crisp and vibrant, with brightness of 500 nits (cd/m² ), a contrast ratio of 800:1 and color temperature of 10,000 K.
Despite its unprecedented screen size, the 54-inch TFT-LCD TV is exceptionally thin and light, even for a flat-panel television. The TFT-LCD module is only two inches thick and weighs just 44 pounds - this makes mounting easier than all other models now available. The TV can also double as a gigantic computer display because of its built-in DVI-I port.
These advanced features and unique screen size, combined with TFT-LCD's inherent crisp display characteristics, make 54-inch TFT-LCD TV one of the most advanced display products available in the market.

Corporate News : Samsung and SONY enter a cross-license agreement to share patent portfolios
Each Retains Exclusionary Rights for Unique “Differentiation Technology Patents” SEOUL, Korea and TOKYO, Japan, December 14, 2004
Samsung Electronics Corporation(hereafter Samsung) and Sony Corporation (hereafter Sony) have signed a Cross-License Agreement on December 14, detailing mutual usage of patent portfolios owned by the two companies. Over the past several decades, Samsung and Sony, have each built strong patent portfolios through vigorous R&D efforts on a wide range of electronic technologies, especially those related to digitalization and broadband network capability. Today’s announcement is the culmination of negotiations that have occurred between the two companies since December 2003. It is noteworthy that the two leading companies in the electronics industry will share patents across major product lines through a cross-license agreement. The goal was to construct a mutually beneficial relationship whereby Samsung and Sony could use each other’s patent portfolios to effectively keep pace with the fast and sophisticated advancement of digital technologies. This indicates a new patent relationship appropriate for the broadband/network era. To enable greater business growth through efficient product development, the Agreement licenses those patents which are considered to be the basic technologies necessary for product development. They are associated with technologies, such as basic semiconductor technology and industry standard technologies. On the other hand, to foster the uniqueness of each company, and healthy competition in the market, so called “Differentiation Technology Patents” and design rights are excluded from the Agreement. Examples of “Differentiation Technology Patents” that are not licensed from Sony to Samsung, are those related to Digital Reality Creation (DRC), and PlayStation Architecture. Patents not licensed from Samsung to Sony are those related to Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe), and Samsung’s Home Networking Technology. Furthermore, the agreement does not apply to TFT-LCD and Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) display patents. Both Sony and Samsung recognize that the Cross-License Agreement will reinforce their ability to provide better products and services to consumers worldwide, while at the same time, maintain each company’s uniqueness and competitiveness. The Cross License Agreement between Samsung and Sony includes the subsidiaries of both companies.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Wireless Olympic Works
What is WOW? WOW ? short for Wireless Olympic Works ? is an initiative from Samsung designed to bring the power of digital information technologies to the A THENS 2004 Olympic Games. Samsung's belief in the power of wireless technology has been crystallized into a unique and innovative information tool based on handheld devices such as mobile phones, Smart (PDA) Phones , designed to help ATHOC (ATHENS 2004 Organising Committee for the Olympic Games) officials and organizers run the Olympic Games effectively and smoothly. WOW enables them to receive the Olympic information by wireless, while the information is currently available only on fixed line-environment. In conjunction with the Olympic Worldwide Partner Schlumberger and the Grand National Sponsor Cosmote under the auspices of ATHOC, Samsung has created the most sophisticated and reliable sports information wireless communications equipment. The wireless vision At previous Olympic Games, information about individual sporting events, results, athletes and accommodation has only been available to officials with direct access to the information source. Prior to the 1960s, this involved vast amounts of paper and inconceivable amounts of highly inefficient manual effort; in the modern era, even PCs connected to huge Games databases and the wider Internet have not fully solved the problems associated with an event routinely involving tens of thousands of athletes, hundreds of thousands of spectators and a huge number of organizers and officials. WOW is the first system that begins to address these issues. The advent of new wireless technology now makes it possible to provide critical information to the people who need it, wherever they may be and at any time. WOW has been designed to ensure that officials, VIPs and ATHOC staff can access the information to make the running of the A THENS 2004 Olympic Games more efficient and more flexible than it has ever been before. In conjunction with some key technology partners and both the IOC and ATHOC, Samsung has combined its deep expertise in digital communications technology with its most advanced handheld mobile devices . The result is the first ever wide-scale, fully operational wireless information system for the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games . >WOW ? built on standards Modern mobile devices such as mobile phones and Smart (PDA) Phones are powerful and flexible tools. Like their PC counterparts, they now routinely include functions that allow their owners to get information from public WAP and websites, send email, receive messages in text form and, of course, make phone calls. This power and flexibility makes them ideal tools for workers at events such as the Olympic Games, who may be widely spread out, in remote locations and far from central sources of information. Samsung is harnessing this power and introducing it into this unpredictable environment, providing the people who run the Games unparalleled access to information about everything from venues to event results and customer services. Due to it being based on existing, well-tested technologies and standards including Client/Server, Java, WAP, SMS, and GPRS, WOW is a solid and reliable system that has been designed to be as safe and robust as a fixed-line alternative such as an Internet-enabled PC. It does not replace the operations management technology that already provides the backbone of the Games; instead, it integrates closely with existing systems and exploits the information that has been previously tied up in the fixed-wire infrastructure, allowing it to be broadcast to wherever it is needed. Critically, the wireless technology of WOW will enable a more cost -effective and budget-relieving operation and allow the Games ' administrators to deploy staff and resources much more efficiently in future Olympics Games . What can WOW do? WOW has been designed to handle a vast array of information and services that are a routine part of the daily lives of the people who run the Olympic Games and support its spectators. Some examples:
Accessing scoring information from events in progress Inform ing event results and updating medal tables Locating nearest resources such as toilets, hotels, restaurants and other facilities near a specific venue Displaying maps of venues Group messaging from ATHOC HQ to staff on-site for the effective running of the Olympic Games
With WOW, all of these things and many more can be done by staff on-site from their mobile device without the need for constant access to a PC or other terminal. There are four main components of the WOW system: • Mobile INFO2004. Mobile INFO2004 ? known as m-INFO2004 for short ? is a wireless information portal, accessed through a mobile phone. Using one of Samsung's latest handsets, users of m-INFO2004 will be able to access news about the Games, schedules and results of particular events, medal tallies and a host of other information ? all with a few clicks of the keys on their Samsung mobile. Information is accessed via the Smart phones and mobile phones. Samsung will be supplying ATHOC officials, staff and VIPs with a range of handsets that best suit individuals and specific tasks. • Information on Demand. Known as IOD, this component of the WOW system will provide automatic alerts and updates on event results and Medal acquiring report of selected country , direct to the handset. Users can choose the events and information they want to be kept updated on from a Preferences screen in the m-INFO2004 module. When the result of a chosen event is known, it will be automatically sent to the phone in the form of a text message. • Olympic Community Messaging. OCM for short, this messaging service will help to keep officials and participants up-to-date with important information about the Games and help manage issues such as cancellations or rescheduling of events. OCM itself has three components - the Official Announcement Notification service will be used to send important announcements to Games officials; the Emergency Alert Messaging service will send information to the emergency services in case of accidents or fires; and the Olympic Staff Schedule Alerting service will be used to keep staff updated on schedules and events, automatically alerting groups of people about changes or updates according to their role or a specific venue, for example. • Mobile Content. Samsung has developed a wide array of entertaining content for users of the WOW service, including Olympic songs, ring tones, and special games . All of the WOW services have been designed with security in mind, and can only be accessed by authorize personnel. Only the users of the Olympic Official devices can access to WOW system with only the authorized phone number. If a device is lost or stolen, the security system blocks the use of the phone completely and alters the device into unauthorized one. The WOW partnership Due to the scale and complexity of WOW, Samsung is working with experienced partners and co-sponsors to build a system that is highly reliable, robust and secure. Samsung itself is responsible for the overall management of WOW, as well as the supply of hardware in the form of handsets and smart phones; development of the core WOW software; the Mobile-INFO2004, IOD and OCM applications; and the final presentation of information to the end user. Its key partners are responsible for other critical areas of the technology: ATHOC , the ATHENS 2004 Organising Committee, has been involved in the design and specification of WOW from its inception and has fully approved and authorize the use of the system by its thousands of officials and staff. ATHOC will be providing the data links and 2 megabytes internet circuit, covering all administration costs and additional telecommunications fees and supplying all network's components (routers, switches and firewalls). In addition ATHOC will be responsible for training users, inputting and sending staff and emergency service alerts and many other vital administrative functions. Schlumberger , the official Information Technology sponsor of the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games , is building the core data and transfer interface for WOW. One of its main tasks is the management of the main INFO2004 database which drives the applications in the handheld devices. Schlumberger will incorporate key event, results, records and other data from the on-venue results system and Games management software into the database, ready for transmission to the core WOW system via XML and other data management methods. It is also designing and managing the Internet data feeds and information diffusion systems that carefully control the flow of information backwards and forwards between mobile users and the central databases. Cosmote , the mobile and wireless telecomms subsidiary of the Greek Telecommunications Organization (OTE), is responsible for the wireless network which will be used to transmit the data. Cosmote's GPRS data network will handle the transmission of information from the WOW core to the end-users, and it will also provide SMS and WAP gateways for handling message and browsing traffic to and from the WOW databases. Conclusion WOW will redefine the way in which international sporting events are organized and managed. Simple for users to understand and operate, it is the first system to address the specialized needs of the Olympic Games and its supporting staff using the latest wireless standards. As such, it represents one of Samsung's most important contributions to the sporting world. Samsung and WOW are setting new standards for efficiency and organization that will make the first truly wireless Olympic Games more successful than ever before. Samsung is proud to make all these possible in Athens, the birthplace of the modern day Olympic Games. About the enhanced Samsung Handset The 2004 Olympic Family can enjoy the enhanced Samsung Handset (especially Smart Phone) features such as Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) and email application which may be used by ATHOC to exchange information internally with fully secured encryption and authentication technologies.

The Samsung 256Mb XDR ™ has an Octal Data Rate process that transfers data at eight bits per clock cycle, while cranking up the transfer speed to an industry-leading eight Gigabytes per second. That speed is ten times faster than DDR 400 memory and five times faster than RDRAM ™ (PC800). To transfer data in a stable manner at the extremely high speeds, Samsung is using Differential Rambus Signal Level (DRSL) technology.
“XDR ™ technology has tremendous potential to become a leading memory solution for today's highest-performance multimedia applications and we're quite enthusiastic about its prospects,” said Mueez Deen, marketing director, graphics memory, Samsung Semiconductor.
Moreover, Samsung is scheduled to introduce a 512Mb XDR ™ DRAM, capable of transferring data as fast as 12.8 Gigabytes per second, during the first half of this year. With the introduction of yet another leading edge DRAM technology the company proofs its leadership position in the high-performance DRAM market.
The market analysis firm, IDC, predicts that the XDR ™ DRAM market will grow steadily, beginning in 2005, with global shipments exceeding 800 million 256Mbit-equivalent units until 2009.
Samsung Electronics has been the world's foremost producer of DRAMs for the past 13 years. The company produces a diverse memory portfolio that spans DDR2, graphics DRAM, mobile DRAM and now the next-generation, super-fast XDR ™ DRAM.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG SHOWCASES NEW PLASMA MONITORS FOR PRO A/V AND COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS
Las Vegas, NV -- Samsung , the world's leading manufacturer of CRT and TFT computer monitors and professional displays, unveils three stunning new additions to its family of high-end plasma displays designed for the professional and commercial marketplace. The new plasma lineup includes the 42” high-definition PPM42M5H , the 42” standard-definition PPM42M5S and the 50” PPM50M5H . All new plasma monitors will be on display at InfoComm 2005 at Samsung's booth #2318 . Pricing and availability dates have not yet been determined. “As a worldwide display and technology leader, Samsung understands the rigorous environment and intensive market for high-end digital signage and plasma display products. Samsung's newest generation plasma monitors on exhibit at InfoComm 2005 highlight the company's commitment to providing the most advanced display solutions available today,” states Mark Pickard, Senior Product Marketing Manager for Pro A/V displays, for Samsung's Information Technology Division (ITD) . “Samsung's new 42-inch and 50-inch plasma monitors offer dramatically higher contrast ratios and brightness levels than in any previous iteration of our plasma products. These, combined with other high-end Samsung technologies, provide customers with superior image quality for any professional, commercial or corporate display application.” Higher Contrast, Brighter Picture, Amazing Quality
Samsung's new high-end plasma monitors are ideal display solutions for digital signage, financial, multimedia presentation and professional audio and video applications. All new plasmas offer a super-high 10,000:1 contrast ratio and 1, 100 cd/m² brightness level. The 10,000:1 contrast ratio provides whiter whites, blacker blacks and greater shadow detail. In order to achieve this super-high 10,000:1 contrast ratio, Samsung has developed an exclusive octal plasma pixel structure that increases the electrical separation between the pixels. This reduces the tendency for one pixel to influence the adjacent pixel, which increases the contrast. Samsung has also chosen a high-Xenon gas, which is up to 50% more efficient in generating brightness. The 42” PPM42M5H features a high 1024 x 768 resolution and is true high-definition by matching the 720p HDTV format without the need for processing. The standard-definition 42” PPM42M5S is a more economical display solution incorporating a 852 x 480 resolution. The 50” PPM50M5H is perfect for use in presentation and digital signage applications and sports a 1366 x 768 resolution. Samsung's latest family of plasma displays offer a gamut of advanced features that ensure outstanding image quality and performance. All models include Picture-in-Picture and Picture-by-Picture functionality that is ideal for videoconferencing and a built-in processor for “tiling” displays in a 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, 1x5 and 5x1 configuration, making the units perfect for video wall applications. In addition, the displays can be mounted either horizontally or vertically, terrific for electronic signboards and video advertising applications. For an array of display options, the plasmas feature variable aspect ratios with six separate modes including 16:9 and 4:3, and a 10x digital zoom and pan control. Samsung's new lineup of plasma displays offer advanced Anti-Burn Technologies including Auto Pixel Shift that keeps the images moving imperceptibly and Samsung's Always White technology combines with its Signal Pattern Process to eliminate electrically charged residual images. The new models feature an array of signal inputs for direct hook up to nearly any video source. Each display device includes inputs for composite video, component video that offers 480i/p, 720p and 1080i viewing, S-Video for gaming applications, DVI for digital video sources and an RGB input for use with a PC. Samsung backs its plasma displays with an industry leading two-year parts and labor warranty. Corporate News : SAMSUNG Develops World’s Largest (82”) Full HDTV TFT-LCD
- The world’s largest 82-inch TFT-LCD developed at Samsung’s 7G line.
- Viewing angle of 180° achieved by applying Samsung’s proprietary S-PVA technology.
- 12.44 million thin-film transistors used to achieve full HD image quality of 6.22 million pixels.
- Samsung to unveil the 82-inch TFT-LCD at CeBIT 2005 in Hannover, Germany.
SEOUL, Korea – March 7, 2005 – Samsung Electronics, the leading provider of TFT-LCD display panels, announced that it has developed the world's largest 82-inch TFT-LCD. This full HD image quality TFT-LCD panel was developed at the company's new production complex in Tangjeong, Korea. The soon-to-be operational 7 th -generation production facility uses glass substrates that measure 1.87m x 2.20m. Samsung has made a series of breakthroughs in TFT-LCD technology ahead of the competition over the years. The company developed the first 40-inch model in August 2001, the first 46-inch panel in October 2002, the first 57-inch model in December 2003 and now the first 82-inch panel. At its 7 th -generation Line 7-1, Samsung can produce two 82-inch panels from a single substrate. Previously, technological limitations prevented the development of LCDs of this size and competitive technologies, such as PDP and DLP technologies, were used to produce such large-sized panels. Samsung's latest large-screen TFT-LCD offers a variety of features. The company applied its patented Super Patterned-ITO Vertical Alignment (S-PVA) technology to achieve extra-wide viewing angles. In addition, the product boasts a low-dispersion color filter and ultra high aperture ratio, achieving a contrast ratio of at least 1200:1 and brightness of 600nit (cd/m²). Response times are at 8ms or faster, providing clear moving picture images. A high-color-saturation backlight raises color saturation to 92% to produce a premium image quality. Sang Soo Kim, Senior Vice President and Head of the LCD Development Center, states, “Our 82-inch LCD panel proves Samsung Electronics' technological leadership. It uses our proprietary S-PVA technology, eliminating distortion from all angles and offers a 180-degree viewing angle. With this panel, we have achieved the world's best performance in terms of contrast ratio, viewing angle and color saturation.” Samsung is set to begin operations at the world's first 7 th -generation TFT-LCD production line at Tangjeong, Korea. This facility can be used to produce the company's full line-up of LCD modules for TV: from 23-inch (24 per substrate), 26-inch (18 per substrate) and 32-inch (12 per substrate) to 40-inch (8 per substrate) and 46-inch (6 per substrate). Samsung Electronics is at least one year ahead of the competition in terms of using 7 th -generation production technology to make modules of 40 inches, 46 inches and 57 inches. It is therefore in a position to take an early lead in the fast-growing market for large-screen, wall-hanging TVs. The development of the 82-inch TFT-LCD marks the smooth launch of Samsung's and Sony's joint venture in S-LCD. The 7 th -generation line will begin mass production at the end of March. Samsung Electronics will unveil its 82-inch TFT-LCD at CeBIT 2005, which opens in Hannover, Germany on March 10. Samsung Electronics' LCD Lines

Terminology PVA Technology
Patterned-ITO Vertical Alignment is a proprietary Samsung technology for achieving a wide viewing-angle. The liquid crystal molecules are originally aligned at 90 degrees vertically to the electrodes. The passage of an electric field deflects the liquid crystal molecules off-vertical, producing the required image. Similar to the multi-domain vertical alignment (VA), the liquid crystals are controlled by separating unit pixels into four domains. S-PVA Technology
Samsung's patented Super PVA is an upgraded PVA liquid crystal cell technology. The cell architecture accommodates eight, rather than the conventional four crystals, so that the liquid crystal molecules can be controlled in eight different directions and angles. This capability greatly enhances the side viewing-angle of the LCD screen. Color Saturation
This is a measurement of color purity and is compared against the NTSC (National Television Standard Committee) standard of 100. Commercial CRT TVs and LCD TVs normally have a color saturation of 72%, but a higher level is needed to achieve high-definition image quality. TV Resolution Classifications

The Olympic Games, which Samsung has sponsored since 199 7 , is the best known of these, but Samsung also supports a number of international competitions and events encompassing sports as diverse as horse riding, volleyball, golf, gymnastics and running. 2003 Official Partner of Daegu Universiade Games as multi-category supplier (audio/visual equipment and home appliances and wireless telecommunications equipment)
2003 Samsung Super League Kicked Off in La Baule in May and finished in Barcelona in September
The Asian Games First hosted in New Delhi in 1952, the Asian Games is now one of the world's largest sporting events. Like the Olympic Games, they are held every four years to promote goodwill and friendship among the nations belonging to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). The Asian Games has grown quickly since its inception. The last event, hosted in the port of Bu s an in South Korea in 2002, attracted over 18,000 athletes, officials and journalists from 44 countries. Samsung has been directly involved with the Asian Games since 1986, when it became a local sponsor. The company has been involved in sponsorship of every Games since then, being the only Korean sponsor of the Beijing 1990 Asian Games and the Hiroshima 1994 Asian Games . Samsung was designated an Official Partner for the 13 th Bangkok Asian Games in 1998 and went on to become a multi-category Official Partner for the 14 Busan Asian Games, supplying audio-visual equipment, home appliances, and wireless telecommunications equipment. As a multi-category sponsor, Samsung played an important role in ensuring that Asia's largest sporting event was a resounding success. The games served as an opportunity for Samsung to engage in marketing activities aimed at boosting sales and corporate stature in the Asian region. Samsung sponsored Korea's first torch relay program, developing marketing activities to coincide with the month-long relay that traversed the entire country, and organized numerous other events including a ‘unification marathon' in which 5,000 people took part. It also staged various events at the Samsung PR pavilion, turning it into a venue for cross-cultural interaction. One such event, the Power of Asia program, involved assembling a group of over 65,000 people from all around Asia to cheer on participating teams. Surveys have shown that awareness of the Samsung brand rose by over 20% on 2001 levels following Samsung's sponsorship of the 14 th Busan Asian Games, with corresponding rises in sales and revenues. Equestrian Sports: The Samsung Super League Horse-riding has long been a sport supported by Samsung, which has worked hard to foster positive sporting images of humans and animals working in concert. To date, the company has co-sponsored many of the premiere equestrian events in Europe and North America; in particular the Samsung Nations Cup Series, a long-established international equestrian competition which attracts teams from all the major horse-riding nations. To promote the oldest and most respected equestrian competition, Samsung joined forces with the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) to create the Samsung Super League, a new competition involving the eight top teams from the Nations Cup series . The Samsung Super League is effectively a world equestrian games tournament, attracting the best riders and their horses from all over the world. The inaugural season of the Samsung Super League began in May and came to a successful finish in September. Despite suffering a defeat in the final event, the victory of first season went to the French team. Samsung has signed a sponsorship contract with the FEI that runs through 2005. The tournament will raise the profile of equestrian sports as a whole, and reinforce Samsung's reputation as a company that supports sporting activity in many spheres. Golf: The Samsung World Championship The Samsung World Championship is one of the highlights of the US Ladies' Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour. Noted for its inclusion of the world's top players, the Championship has been held since 1980, with Samsung becoming its official sponsor in 1995. The SWC is open only to the world's best golfers, including the defending champion, the winners of the four LPGA majors and the leading money winners from the previous year's LPGA tournament, who compete for a purse worth $US800,000. The winner qualifies for the four majors for three years and the LPGA tour for one year, making it a highly attractive event for the top players. It has also been largely responsible for the emergence of Korea as a major force in world golf; in 1999, Se Ri Pak won the tournament in a field of 20 international players, boosting Korea's reputation as a golfing nation. In 2003, the SWC was broadcast live by ESPN-NBC in America, Star Sports in Asia and on other influential channels throughout the world. Played in Texas, where Samsung has a presence in the semiconductor manufacturing industry, the event has had a positive effect on Samsung's image in the local community and is now widely regarded as the ‘fifth major'. Samsung has signed a contract that extends its sponsorship of the tournament into 2006. Athletics: Running Festivals The first Samsung Running Festival was originally conceived in 1995 as part of the celebrations of the fifth anniversary of Samsung's launch in Hungary. The company's efforts were rewarded with the participation of 80,000 Hungarian citizens, and today the Samsung Running Festival has established itself as a truly global event in which hundreds of thousands people take part all over the world. By 1997 39 cities in central and eastern Europe were hosting running events, with 250,000 participants; and in 1998, simultaneous events were held in Beijing, New Delhi and Bangkok, with Samsung donating $1 for every runner to respective National Olympic Committees. Since then Running Festivals have been held as far apart as Australia, Russia and America.
Based on a 5-kilometre non-competitive mini-marathon, the Running Festivals are open to anyone of any age. Designed to be more than just a race, each event is held in the spirit of co-operation between people of different cultures and beliefs and the blurring of geographical boundaries. Runners come from all walks of life; renowned athletes, socially prominent individuals, average citizens and young children all take part alongside one another. An associated fundraising program helps to generate financial support for a wide variety of good causes and national sports programs. Crufts Dog Show Crufts is the world most famous and prestigious dog show, with more than 20,000 top pedigree dogs competing from over 30 countries. Samsung has been the sole sponsor of the show since 1993, supplying all the remote-controlled video equipment and electronic systems needed to run the event. Samsung has a substantial presence at the show, including an area devoted to the company's animal protection activities. Samsung established Korea's first guide dog training facility to assist blind people. It also trains rescue dogs, dogs that help people with rehabilitation, and supports PAT (Pet as Therapy) programs.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG and the Olympic Games
Introduction Samsung Electronics has consistently sponsored and supported a broad range of sporting events for almost 20 years, including many world-class competitions such as the Olympic Games and the Asian Games. Sport's ability to unify people regardless of their age, race, or gender strongly echoes Samsung's corporate philosophy, which seeks to improve human society through the application of digital technology. Samsung's belief in the importance of sport forms the cornerstone of the company's marketing and communication strategy. Sport not only plays an important part in elevating Samsung's brand recognition in major international markets, but also demonstrates the company's commitment to responsible corporate citizenship and global friendship. Without doubt the largest and most significant sporting event in the world today is the Olympic Games, where the true spirit of sport, competition and honor is upheld by the Olympic Charter and the International Olympic Committee. Samsung will be once again heavily involved with the A THENS 2004 Olympic Games in its capacity as a worldwide sponsor and official wireless communications equipment partner. Samsung will also be Presenting Partner at the A THENS 2004 Olympic Games Torch Relay , taking place around the world in June/July 2004. Samsung and the Olympic Games Samsung's involvement with the Olympic Movement began in 1988, when it became a national sponsor for the Seoul Olympic Games. Samsung then became a worldwide sponsor as the wireless telecommunications equipment sponsor for Nagano 1998 Olympic Winter Games and Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The company has recently confirmed its commitment as worldwide sponsor of the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games and the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in the wireless communications equipment category. A measure of the value to the sponsor can be gauged from the results of Samsung's sponsorship of the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, which raised awareness of the brand by 5% to 16.2 %. Corporate News : SAMSUNG Electronics Unveils 7.2Mega-pixel CMOS Image Sensor
Seoul Korea , September 12 , 2005 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a leader in advanced semiconductor technology, announced that it has developed a 7.2 megapixel CMOS image sensor (CIS). It is the world's first 7.2M-pixel CIS for compact cameras with the smallest pixel size. Higher resolution CIS chips reflect the industry-wide attention on CIS technology as a promising new imaging technology as well as a feasible replacement of charge-coupled device (CCD), especially in mobile applications such as camera phones, digital still cameras and digital camcorders. This announcement was made at a press conference hosted by Samsung Electronics' semiconductor business president and CEO, Dr. Chang-Gyu Hwang in Seoul . Samsung's 7.2M-pixel CIS has a 1/2-inch lens aperture and a 2.25um pixel size. The proprietary pixel structure enhances the fill factor over 55 percent and delivers high signal to noise ratio. Copper technology has been used for interconnects, and the resulting reduced pixel height gives high focusing efficiency and sensitivity. The overall performance is comparable to , or even exceeds, CCD quality. The CMOS image sensors are achieving broader presence in today's mobile applications as the industry acknowledges the benefits and advances of the CMOS-based technology. After announcing the 5M-pixel CIS last June, Samsung's 7.2M-pixel underscores the high potential and value CIS technology can deliver for future high resolution and quality imaging. Supporting the low power requirement in mobile or portable applications, the new CIS chip performs at the same level and operates at a power level that is a mere 10 percent of its charge-coupled device (CCD) counterpart. The lower power consumption and price competitiveness makes the CIS an attractive solution for image devices now being used on mobile phones and other portable digital appliances such as cameras and camcorders. Industry research firm Gartner Dataquest predicts that the global CIS market will increase from US$2.4 billion in 2004 to US$3.2 billion this year and surge to US$5.6 billion by 2008.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Electronics Underscores Mobile Technology Leadership at Annual Press Conference
Seoul , Korea , Sept ember 12, 2005 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a leader in advanced semiconductor solutions, announced three new technologies targeted at the expanding, multi-facetted mobile application industry. At a press conference held today in Seoul , Samsung Electronics' semiconductor business president and CEO, Dr. Chang-Gyu Hwang, introduced the following new devices : • a 16Gb NAND flash memory using 50-nm technology for increased mobile storage;
• a 7.2 mega-pixel CMOS image sensor for high-end digital pictures ; and
• Fusion semiconductors for N ext-generation smart phones and PDAs , MP3 music players , and Subscriber identity module card applications .
“Consumers are looking for ever smaller, more stylish mobile devices,” said Dr. Hwang. “This poses a challenge for the semiconductor industry to create chips that meet the high-performance, high-density and minimum space requirements but don't become a power drain. We're uniquely position ed to address the market with high value products as we are the only company that manufactures all the discrete components that go into these new solutions.” Increased Mobile Storage
Samsung has developed the world's highest density NAND flash – a 16Gb multi-level cell (MLC) NAND memory. The 16Gb NAND density was achieved with the industry first use of 50-nanometer (nm) technology directly applicable to mass production processes and by using Samsung's proprietary 3D-transistor architecture. The finer geometry substantially reduces the noise level between cells and enables continued migration of storage platforms. Higher Resolution Reflects Industry Attention
Samsung has developed a 7.2 megapixel CMOS image sensor (CIS) for many different types of compact digital cameras. Higher resolution CIS chips reflect an industry-wide attention on CIS technology as a promising new imaging technology as well as a feasible replacement of charge-coupled device (CCD), especially in mobile applications such as camera phones, digital still cameras and digital camcorders. Fusion Semiconductor Technology for Mobile Applications
Leading the mobile convergence trend, Samsung has developed multi-featured Fusion Semiconductor solutions that provide space and power-sensitive packaging solutions for mobile applications. Fusion Semiconductor solutions combine memory and system LSI semiconductor devices into a single solution. Samsung's new package-on-package (PoP), the SC32442 MSP, stacks together a high-performance, low-power mobile application processor with a memory multi-chip package (MCP), which contains NAND flash and low-power mobile SDRAM. With dimensions of 14x14x1.6mm, Samsung's new PoP can offer up to a 60 percent space saving on mobile handheld printed circuit boards (PCBs), compared to using discrete processor and memory devices. The new SiP for MP3 players carries a low power MP3 decoder, audio CODEC chipset, NOR flash for code execution, and NAND flash for MP3 file storage. The SiP has a flexible design with NAND density of 512MB can easily be brought up to 1GB. The CODEC and NOR flash can also be selectively removed. The base design can then be utilized to meet the diverse features of MP3 players . Samsung's SiP can also resolve the large area coverage of the individual components and enable set designers to introduce even smaller or slimmer new MP3 players. The new S-SIM for high-density SIM cards mounts a collective choice of in-house memory and system LSI technologies in a single package: a 128MB NAND Flash, a NAND Flash controller, and a SIM card IC. Samsung's S-SIM SiP solution provides a diverse set of high-speed interfaces including MMC, USB and several hundred-mega bits-per-second data transfer level that matches that of a PC. Further information about all four of these new technologies is available at www.samsungsemi.com .
